Immigration and customs into USA?

I am currently in costa rica and will be turning to the USA where I am a citizen. My flight leaves San Jose,cr and then arrives into ft. Lauderdale,fl and I am supposed to continue to chicago. When I arrive back into USA in ft lauderdale will I have to retrieve my checked luggage and then recheck in? I ask because I would like to stay in ft laudedale for a few days and don't want my luggage to continue with me. Is this possible?
