Boxers Championship Belts?

I read in Wikipedia when a boxer lets say loses his fight defending his IBF belt the winner gets a new belt made for him and the former champion keeps his belt forever is this true and also if someone vacates their title belt do they keep their belt or do they give it up also when you retire with your belt do you keep your belt.
