Why does the AFI only have old stars on its 100 years.. 100 Stars?

I noticed that there is not one current actor on the list of the best stars list on afi, i dont understand why this is, i mean tom hanks, morgan freeman and robert de niro are some of the best actors ive ever seen, why arent they on there, is it because they just want to comemorate all the old stars
